Bogdan Ambrožič received his medical degree from the Faculty of Medicine at the University of Ljubljana in 1995. In 1996 he began to specialize in the field of orthopaedics, which he completed in 2001. After obtaining his specialization, he received additional education in specialized hospitals in Germany, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Croatia, and Austria. He was educated by leading experts in orthopaedic surgery (P. Lobenhoffer, D. Dejour., W. Marth, G. Oberthaler, P. Neyeret., M. Strobel., P. Schoettle., G. Walch., L. Lafosse., P. Volpi., S. Guillo, N. Van Dyke, P. Collombet, B. Zifko, I. Bojanić).
In 2009, he received a master's degree in medical science and in 2017 he finished the Ph.D. analysing the influence of medial patellofemoral ligament on patellar stability.
His practice is based on arthroscopic and minimally invasive surgical treatments of injuries and diseases of the shoulder, knee joint and ankle, also through the use of computer technology.
In respect to the shoulder joint, he most often intervenes in arthroscopic stabilization of the joint, the stabilization of the AC joint, and in the reconstruction of the rotator cuff.
In the case of the knee joint, he performs arthroscopic repair of damaged meniscus and cartilage, reconstruction of ligaments, including multi-ligament reconstructions. In addition, he performs stabilization of the patella by reconstructing the medial patellofemoral ligament, the transposition of the patellar ligament and trochleoplasty. In the case of a knee deformity or arthrosis, corrective osteotomy is performed in the knee joint, both on the femur and on the tibia. In these procedures, he uses navigation and 3D printed guides for each patient’s and its individual anatomy. On the ankle, in addition to arthroscopy with back and frontal approaches, he performs arthroscopic stabilization of the joint and tendinoscopy.
In addition, he uses biological methods for treating damaged joints and tendinopathies with thrombocyte plasma (PRP), mesenchymal stem cells and amniotic membranes.
In Slovenia he introduced the method of stabilizing the patella with the reconstruction of the medial patellofemoral ligament (MPFL), the method of reconstructing the anterolateral ligament (ALL) and he performed the first meniscus transplantation. He also started performing osteotomies in the knee joint by means of navigation and patient specific guides.
He organized numerous arthroscopic symposia and workshops, and he is visiting lecturer at conferences and symposiums in Slovenia and abroad. He is a member of the editorial board and reviewer of the European Association for Arthroscopy and Sports Injury (ESSKA), reviewer of Orthopaedics Journal of Sports Medicine (OJSM), a member of the European Committee for Osteotomy, and an active member of the Slovenian Association for arthroscopy and sports injuries.
